Bonegrinder

"Ugly" is the first word that springs to mind when first viewing this crudely fashioned two-handed mace. The weapon's haft is fashioned from a thick length of crudely hewn wood wrapped with rusty steel bands. Its business end is made from a jagged, bloodstained, section of some gigantic thigh bone, which has been crudely fastened to the haft with heavy cords of twisted leather. Though the weapon's construction seems somewhat haphazard it is quite solid when wielded, its enchantment lending strength and stability to its structure. The Bonegrinder is rather large, requiring at least a human-sized wielder, but no great strength is required, appearances to the contrary.

The Bonegrinder radiates Superb combat magic. A Great test of divination magic will reveal its magical properties, though no particular invocations are required to take advantage of its capabilities. The weapon has the following properties:
  • Fair accuracy enhancement. As mentioned the weapon is, despite appearances, well-constructed and well-balanced.
  • Great damage bonus. Even the weakest wielder can inflict terrible blows with this weapon. Creatures that are primarily made of bone, skeletons, bone golems and the like, take triple damage from Bonegrinder.
  • Bonebreaker - Any exceptional success on an attack results in a bone breaking blow, disabling the target of the attack. The GM should determine what constitutes an exceptional success, but as a guideline, any critical hit or three rank margin of success should activate the Bonebreaker effect. The resulting disabling wound should require at least a Great healing test to negate. Creatures without skeletons (jellies, oozes and the like) are immune to Bonebreaker.

One Liners

A handful of item short takes today. I'm feeling a bit scattered, so rather than a single item, here are a few quick ideas that can be used as is, or fleshed out to as needed. Sometimes I feel being too detailed is a bad thing, leaving no wiggle room for the GM.
  • The Mantis - An ornate mace with a handle carved and enameled to resemble a praying mantis at rest. The mace head is held within the mantis's forelimbs. Fair damage and accuracy weapon, with Great damage bonus versus insects.
  • Intruder's Hand - A short, thick-bladed dagger with a solid iron hilt ending in a heavy, round pommel. The weapon is curiously unbalanced, using the blade in combat incurs a Fair penalty to accuracy. The pommel makes quite an effective billy club however, providing a Good chance to stun human-sized foes. The blade is an admirable pry, granting a Fair bonus to opening doors or locks if it can be applied.
  • Bawd's Stein - This plain pewter mug is the working girl's friend. It negates the effect of any poison or drug placed within. With a word the owner can also remove the alcohol from any beverage poured into the Stein, or cause it to simply disappear. The Stein also serves as a Fair quality weapon in a bar fight.
  • Cloudwrap - At first glance this item is nothing more than a gray silk cloak with a polished iron clasp. Once donned the item's power becomes apparent, as the cloak transforms, becoming a mantle of shifting gray clouds which provide a Good defensive bonus and Great resistance to electrical attacks. Twice per day the wearer can become insubstantial for five rounds, immune to physical attack and able to pass through small openings with ease.
  • The Chameleon's Dish - Cut from maple burlwood, this oval plate has a polished face and an ornate rim carved with intertwined chameleons. Thrice per day the plate can be commanded to transform any meal it holds into food of the finest quality, removing any taints or poisons in the process.
There you have it! Enjoy your weekend!

Blastbone

This heavy obsidian-headed mace is carved in the shape of a three-faced human skull. The eyes of the skull are set with faceted rubies that seem to glow with an inner fire. The butt of the steel haft bears a cabochon cut ruby and the haft itself is carved with a diamond crisscross pattern, providing a solid grip. The upper portions of the haft are enameled with straight black lines running from the top of the diamond engravings to the mace head itself. The top of the haft protrudes a short distance beyond the end of the mace head and is capped with a broad steel disc.

Identifying the magical properties of the item will reveal:
  • Good damage and accuracy enhancement
  • Superb destructive magic vs. undead
  • Great sound enchantment
  • Epic cursed nature
  • Blastbone radiates good

The mace has the following powers and abilities:
  • Triple normal damage when used against undead
  • Good damage and accuracy bonus in when used against non-undead
  • Once per day the skull heads can be commanded to scream. This piercing scream affects all undead within 60'. It destroys lesser undead instantly and causes greater undead Great harm.
  • If undead are encountered Blastbone's owner must resist a Superb compulsion or immediately engage them in melee. Once engaged he or she will continue to fight so long as undead are present.
  • If the owner of Blastbone is slain by undead, he or she immediately rises as an undead revenant, targeting the undead that killed them. Once this task is accomplished they collapse to dust and are irrevocably slain.
